Create a plan that is easy to stick to for healthy teeth and gums.

How often do you actually think about the process of brushing and flossing your teeth while you’re doing it? For many, these habits are a time for us to space out and daydream (ater all, we’ve been brushing and flossing as long as we’ve been combing out hair and making our beds); however, practicing good oral care can help you maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. From the office of our Norcross, GA, dentist Dr. Orson Baek, here are some ways to improve your current dental routine at home.

Brush Your Teeth

You should brush your teeth twice a day: when you get up in the morning and right before bedtime. You do want to spend ample time making sure all those surfaces of your teeth and gums are as clean as they can possibly be. You can do this by using fluoride toothpaste and by brushing your teeth for at least two minutes at a time.

Flossing

Flossing is brushing’s sidekick, so you should be doing both in order to maintain a healthy smile. While you need to brush twice a day you only need to floss once a day. Along with reducing your risk for gum disease, flossing also reduces the risk of decay and bad breath.

Get Enough Fluoride

We need fluoride to keep our teeth healthy and strong. Fluoride can be found in the toothpaste we use; however, we often get fluoride through our diet (particularly drinking water). While bottled water doesn’t typically contain fluoride, you can get the fluoride you and your children need by staying hydrated and drinking tap water. Of course, our Norcross, GA, family dentist will be able to examine your teeth and determine whether or not you and your family could benefit from fluoride treatment.

Limit Snacks

The more you spend snacking throughout the day the more plaque is going to accumulate on your teeth. If you find yourself reaching for guilty-pleasure snacks rather than healthier options this can also cause excessive wear and tear on your teeth. To reduce your risk for cavities, limit yourself to two snacks a day. If you want to consume sugar do so with dinner, which can lessen its effect on tooth enamel.
