Did you know that half of American adults over 30 have gum disease? The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports it. At Smart Family Dental Care in Norcross, GA, your dentist, Dr. Orson Baek, wants you to understand gum disease and how to prevent it. Your oral and systemic health depend on it.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States, states the American Academy of Periodontology. This association of specialty dentists and researchers also reports that the bacteria and biofilms (plaque and tartar) which cause gum disease can be managed, reducing symptoms and health problems, such as diabetes, linked to it.

What are the symptoms?

Whether you have less noticeable gingivitis or advanced periodontitis, the inflammation from intraoral Strep bacteria causes several symptoms. They vary in intensity, and early on, you may not even notice them. However, your Norcross dentist and hygienist will observe them as they do their routine exams and other preventive services.

Symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Bleeding when you brush and floss
  • Puffy, red, tender gums
  • Sores or fistulas on the gums
  • Pus at the gum line
  • Loose, widely spaced teeth
  • Dark gum tissue
  • Changes in dental bite and in how a denture fits and feels
  • Receding gum tissue
  • Formation of gum pockets between your teeth and soft tissues
  • Bad breath which does not go away

Unfortunately, the tendency to develop gum problems does run in families. However, other factors seem more causative:

  • Cigarette smoking
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Poor brushing and flossing
  • Neglecting professional cleanings
  • A diet low in fiber
  • Stress
  • Teeth clenching
  • Some medications such as birth control pills

Can it be treated?

Yes, even advanced periodontitis can be treated. Dr. Baek may recommend better flossing and brushing, a deep cleaning and root planing with your hygienist to remove tartar and even laser gum surgery to debride infected tissue, kill bacteria, and seal healthy tissue. Antibiotics may be prescribed as well. You'll see your hygienist for follow-up cleanings according to a set schedule.

How can I prevent gum problems?

Good oral hygiene practices at home, in-office care and a healthy diet are your gums' best friends. Also, limit your alcohol intake, and if you smoke, see your primary care physician about supervised ways to kick the habit for good.
